Know your Neck Tie

Know your Tie

There are several standard ways to knot a tie: The Four-in-hand knot , the Windsor knot, half-Windsor etc. Undoubtedly , four-in-hand knot is the easiest, and an appropriate knot for all occaisions. It is the smallest and most precise of knots.Whatever the knot be, each should be tied so that there is a dimple or crease in the center of the tie just below the knot.

The colour selection of the tie should depend upon the country you are in.For eg,in Brazil, avoid wearing a tie with the combination of yellow and green. These are Brazil's national colors, and Brazilians do not like a non-Brazilian wearing them.

Striped ties do not go with striped shirts or jackets. Choose a solid or patterned tie with striped shirts. Loud ties go well with plain white or solid-color shirt.

A tie that only hangs to the belly-button looks cheap; one that hangs over your pants fly does not look nice. Even worse, when the broad end of the tie is outdistanced by the narrow end. Instead, the tip of the broad end should extend just to the top of your belt buckle.

There are some tips to begin with : Drape the necktie around your collar so that the seam of the tie is lying along the collar. The broad end should be on the side of your dominant hand. Now for the measuring trick: place the tip of the narrow end just above the fourth button down your shirt , and eliminate the slack by pulling down on the broad end. Again, the tie seam should remain hidden in the back.

Another measuring trick is to let the broad end hang down twice as long as the narrow end. To check if you've done this right, fold the broad end in half up towards your neck. The folded portion should be equal in length to the narrow end.

Instructions for The Four-in hand knot

1.Start with wide end of the tie on your right and extending a foot below narrow end.
2.Turn wide end back underneath narrow end.
3.Continue by bringing wide end back over in front of narrow end once more.
4.Pull wide end up and through the loop around your neck. .
5.Holding front of knot loose with index finger, pass wide end down through loop in front.
6.Remove finger and tighten knot carefully. Draw up tight to collar by holding narrow end and sliding knot snug.

Care your Tie

Always unknot your tie when you're not wearing it. Leave it knotted will cause permanent wrinkles. Rolling the tie up from the narrow end first and leaving it for a day or two will remove some wrinkles. To unknot the tie, reverse the tying procedure. Don't pull the knot down the small end of the tie. This could break the thread on the inside that runs from one end of the tie to the other and helps maintain the balance of the tie.

Dry cleaning is not advisable for ties. While the tie is pressed while dry cleaning, the lining gets compressed and luster of the silk is lost.
A water stain can generally be removed by rubbing it with a piece of the same fabric (may be with other end).
More serious stains can be removed by a spot remover such as carbon tetrachloride.
