"Learning
is acquired by reading books, but the much more necessary learning,
the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading
human, and studying all the various editions of them"-Lord
chesterfield, "Letters to his Son".
Within
the last few years a new and exciting science has been disclosed
and explored. It is called body language. Both its written form
and the scientific study of it have been called as Kinesics. It
is quite a very vast area under research now. Let us see a brief
not on it.
Body
language is an important component of human communication, in
fact, according to psychologists 55% of the impact we make on
someone is from non-verbal language, with 38% attributed to the
way we say it and a mere 7% to the words we actually use. So we
determine the way we are perceived.
Hands/arms and Eyes are used by most of us to communicate our
thoughts effectively. We need to think about whether our body
language matches the words we
are saying. Watching
people, what they wear, how they stand and how they move can all
indicate much more about a person than what they say. Here are
some body language observations.
Openness: Open
hands, unbuttoned shirt or coat.
Defensiveness:
Arms crossed, sideways glance, touching or rubbing the nose, rubbing
eyes, drawing away.
Insecurity:
Chewing pen or pencil, thumb over thumb, biting fingernail.
Confidence:
Hands behind back, hands in steeple position, back stiff, hands
in coat pockets with thumb out, hands on lapels of coat.
Nervousness:
Clearing throat, smoking, whistling, fidgeting, hand covering
mouth, jiggling keys or change, pulling on ears, wringing and
sweating hands.
Frustration:
Short breaths, tightly clenched hands, wringing hands, tight,
fist-like gestures, pointing index finger, rubbing back of neck.
Cooperation:
Upper body in ready position, like a sprinter, open hands, sitting
on edge of chair in anticipation, hand to face gestures.
Being
able to read body language is an extremely useful communication
tool. Knowing what a person's state of mind is can be invaluable
in any kind of relationship, from business to personal.
