"A candle that lights another, loses none of it’s own"

Today, a candle is not only a source of light to be used in case of an emergency, when the electricity goes off, it is a piece of art, fit for the showcase. Making decorative candles which serve the dual purpose of lighting the surroundings and adorning the showcase, is a skill, many people are now developing.

Candle making is one of the most lucrative skills anybody can train himself or herself into. All you need is some space, free time, some minimum investments and determination to reach perfection. If you really have an urge to learn and earn as well as attend to your domestic responsibilities, then here are some tips:

Articles Needed:

  •  Paraffin wax – 250 gms

  • Candle Mould – any thing that has smooth walls inside, Glass, coffee cups, empty cartons, and even a tomato.

  • Crayons – few

  • Perfume – your favourite brand

  • Glitters – few

  • Thermocole balls

  • Thread / wick

Method:

  • Take a pan and half fill it with water.

  • Place some paraffin wax in a beaker.

  • Start boiling the water and place the beaker with wax on it. The wax starts melting.

  • Stir in the desired coloured crayons into the wax. For ex. For a blue candle you need to add a blue coloured crayon.

  • Pour half a teaspoon of perfume into the coloured wax and stir well. Try not to add more.

  • Take the preferred candle mould. Let us try first with a juice glass with a flat bottom.

  • Grease the inner walls of the juice glass with oil and sprinkle some of the glitters on it.

  • Mix the remaining glitters and thermocole balls in the melted wax and pour the wax into the juice glass.

  • Insert a thread/wick before the wax dries up.

  • You can decorate the candle with more beads, golden threads, colour balls etc.,

  • Allow the candle to dry.

  • Take a knife and carefully insert on the inner walls of the juice glass and slowly separate the candle.

  • Your decorative candle is ready to light your party table.

Articles Needed:

  • Paraffin wax – 250 gms

  • A small blue doll -  (A little girl in sitting position or whatever you wish)

  • Saucer

  • Crayons – few of your favourite colours

  • Perfume – Your favourite brand

  • Glitters – few

  • Thread / wick, if needed

Method:

  • Mix one portion of paraffin wax with two portions of water and should be heated on a low flame.

  • Drop a red coloured crayon and few drops of perfume.

  • Pour two spoons of the red melted wax on a greased surface (Greased plate) and flatten it. Use a knife to separate it from greased plate before it gets hard.

  • Twist the red flat wax to the shape of flower. Collect 6-7 flowers.

  • In the same way you can prepare 10 –12 green coloured wax leaves by using a green crayon. You will have to cut the dried wax in the shape of a leaf.

  • Prepare some blue coloured wax using a blue crayon.

  • Pour the blue melted wax on the saucer and place the doll at the center of the saucer.

  • Insert the wax flowers and leaves and sprinkle glitters and golden / silver beads on the blue wax before drying.

  • Allow it to get dry and hard.

  • Your decorative candle is ready to enrich your center table.

Usually Paraffin wax will be available in solid biscuits. Candles are at different form such as regular use candles (Thick), Decorative candles (Loose), Jelly candles (very loose) etc., Decorative candles can be used for lighting purpose and for centerpiece.

Instead of cursing darkness it is better to light a candle—Perhaps a decorative candle!

Note:

  • Spread newspapers in the candle making area. Your clean up will be easier.

  • The pan and moulds used for making candle cannot be used for cooking.

  • Take care while making candle. Hot wax can burn badly.
