Mehendi - Indian tattoo is a beautiful art. Creativity plays a vital role in creating these exotic designs. The henna (ÁÕ¾¡½¢) powder is used for drawing the beautiful designs. 

Mehendi designs, broadly falls into four different styles. Arabic Mehendi style is mostly made up of floral patterns similar to the Arabic paintings and carvings. African Mehendi style generally has geometrical floral patterns. The Indian and Pakistani designs are made up of lines, curl patterns and tear drops.  The Indo-Arabic styles are a mix of Arabic and Indian designs. 

Different styles of Mehendi Art

Arabic 

Indian 

African  Indian  Indo Arabic 

Items needed:

Henna Powder 100 gms
Tamarind a very small ball or stained tea decoction
Eucalyptus oil few drops
Lemon juice (filtered) 1 tbsp
Water to make paste
Sugar syrup 4 tbsp of water is added to 1tbsp of sugar and allow it to dissolve
Thick Plastic sheet  of length 15*15cms
Stapler or tape 
to seal the cone

Method for making Mehendi paste :

 1. Take a small cup; cover it loosely with a thin cloth.
 2. Deposit the Henna Powder over the cloth and sieve it with two fingers. This process separates finely powered henna.
 3. Soak the tamarind with little amount of water. Remove the waste and set aside the filtered juice. 
 4. Add the tamarind juice or tea decoction, Eucalyptus oil, and lemon juice and make a paste. Add extra water if needed. Be careful not to make it too watery.
 5. Keep it aside for at least an hour. Meanwhile we can prepare cone for drawing Mehendi.

Method for making Mehendi cone :

Take a thick plastic sheet (size 15*15cms)
Fold the paper to a triangular shape. Seal the cone using staple or cello tape.
Add the paste into the cone and seal it tightly. Now the cone is ready to use.

Mehendi on your hands:  

1. Select a design and draw it on your hand using the mehendi cone.
2. Allow it to dry for some time. When it partially dries, take the cotton dipped into sugar syrup and gently press it on the mehendi art. Allow it to dry completely or leave it for 4-5 hours.  
3. Remove the dried mehendi by just rubbing the hands. Do not wash with water.
4. Take some oil and give a gentle massage on your hands  for at least 5 seconds.  After ½ an hour, you can wash your hand with water.
