An exclusive
interview with Janaki
Can
you tell about you and your personal life please?
My original name is Janaki
only. Dubbing Janaki is my nick name.I am basically from Andhra
Pradesh. My mother tongue is Telugu. I was born at Vishakapattanam
(Vizag). We shifted to Chennai in 1958 and settled down here. I
am with my two sons, daughter-in-laws, daughter, son-in-law and
four grand children.
How
did you get into cinema industry?
I was basically a stage artiste. Later I shifted to cinema and
then to serials now.
Great .. How many stage dramas
have you performed totally?
(A motherly smile..)
I dont remember the number
would have crossed 1000 atleast.
What
do you think is the milestone in your career?
I would say that the
response for Raththa Kanneer drama in Telugu was wonderful. But the
real milestone is my dubbing for Rohini Hatangadi as Kasthuribai
in Gandhi movie (Telugu)
What
was your first serial?
My first serial is "Antha
Oru Nimidam".It was for AVM.
How many movies and serials have you acted so far?
Aound 500 movies and
25 serials.
You
are a specialist in motherly characters. what do you think about
it?
I think that this is
a great achievement in my career. I have been a mother for almost
all the artistes of South Indian cine industry.
So,
you have acted in all the South Indian languages?
No .Unfortunately the
charecters offered in malayalam industry were not suitable for my
motherly imager. So except malayalam I have acted in all the South
Indian languages. I have acted in Hindi as well.
How
do you manage all these languages? Is it dubbing or you speak all
these languages?
(A big smile) I speak
all the languages except Hindi.
What
do you think about this profession?
I really can not understand
why this question is raised as an issue to all the artistes. We are
also like any other professionals. We come to sets in time, finish
our work and go back to our normal life. As any other profession,
this profession also has its own ups and downs.
What
is your advice to the young professionals in this industry?
Diiscipline and punctuality
are like two eyes of this industry. Above all, "gossip-not".
Which
is your favourite charecter?
In cinema, "Ithu
namma Aalu" in Tamil and "Sapththapathi" in Telugu.
In serials, "Akshaya" in Tamil and in Telugu "Anubandham"
and "Kalisundaam Raa"which is getting telecasted now.
What
do you think as the difference between a movie and a serial.
Serials are faster than
movies. There are situations where we shoot the whole day from morning
to evening and the behind the screen activities like dubbing, editing,
re-recording and mixing are completed on the same night and telecasted
the next day. Even in reach, serials are faster than cinema.
Is
any of your children is in the same profession?
My daughter is a busy
dubbing artiste.
What
are your free time hobbies?
Embroidery, Gardening,
Reading and Cooking
What
are your current projects?
I am doing three serials
in Telugu now.
