Once there was a season in tamil film industry
when a lot of films shot at campus sites were churned out. Main
star cast will be college goers with comedians like Vennira aadai
moorthy and Oru viral Krishnarao in the role of professors. Then
tamil cinema meandered around various trends like comedy, action,
love sentiments etc. Now again this trend is being set off by
"April Mathathil" directed by S.S.Stanley. Srikanth
and Sneha being the heartthrob of younger generation in
the lead role, steal the show.
Srikanth's face and his costumes don't suit his role of economically
backward lad. Srikanth's performance is O.K. except for the climax
scene where he overacts. With tamil cinema being dominated by
many elder actors it is refreshing to see a talented young face.
Our Tamil fans always have a soft corner for buxom personalities
like Khushboo and Jothika. Sneha in this film has gained some
weight and is sure to snatch away many sleeps. Her performance
is also flawless and her homely face expresses the feelings of
dilemma very well. Though she met with an accident and injured
her leg during the shooting of this movie, with her cooperation,
they have canned the movie in time.
Gayathri Jeyaram, in the role of a tomboyish girl dances
for a glamorous song in the beginning, vanishes and reappears
at the end. Karunas in combination with Venkat (Gangai
Amaran's son) excels well in timing comedy though most of the
times it is just eve-teasing type of comedies derating the girls.
People who had not entered college gates are sure to feel for
that if they watch this movie. Srikanth, Sneha and co. seem to
simply enjoy life during their college days.It is funny that though
the film is shot in a college campus and the story revolves around
students, in no scene the students take a book, read or attend
classes. They are always at canteen, smoking, drinking beer and
chatting.
Much is expected from Peter hain after his excellent stunts
in "Run". But he disappoints us as there is only one
fight sequence in the film, which is actually a mob clash. M.V.
Panneerselvam's cinematography is very much appealing to our
eyes. Hats off to Yuvan shankar raja for beautiful songs
and excellent background score.
S.S.Stanley has shown his directorial touch in his debut
film itself in scenes where Srikanth's brother finds it difficult
to eat using a spoon and Srikanth feeling nervous and delicate
to accommodate his friends in his house.
Though the film has average storyline, the director has succeeded
in attracting the younger generation by youthful songs, comedy
and interesting screenplay. There is no doubt that with not much
films to compete with, "April Mathathil" has created
waves among the youth.
