Movie Review:

Though Rajini maintained a good deal of secrecy in not letting out any news or pictures of BABA , the hype created by the media added on to the already mounting expectations. It is always a difficult task to satisfy over expecting ardent fans.

The film opens with shots of various pilgrimage centres and saadhus which make the audience doubt whether they are in a wrong theatre. One can’t avoid this feeling till the end.

The story is very simple and an agmark Rajini’s plot where he is depicted as an angry young man who hangs around with 5 or 6 people around  smoking beedi and drinking liquor all the time. Initially he is an atheist making fun of mantras who turns into a religious person later. As usual Rajini is a ball on fire, but could have avoided some close-up shots revealing his age.

In this film, Rajini is a gifted child who was a disciple of SWAMI BABAJI in his previous birth. He is blessed by BABAJI with a mantra which can be used 7 times. The politicians come to know about the mantra and they pester him to get hold of mantra so as to become the permanent CM for 30 years. By this story Rajini symbolises his present status where the politicians  are trying to pull him into their parties as he has the fan power which is more powerful than mantras.

Rajini’s encounter with Manisha begins with arguments and ends up in an affair which later breaks off. The scenes where Rajini and Manisha meet are so light , hilarious and enjoyable. The scene in which he advises Manisha and tells her about the similarities between yogaasanas and household works is interesting and informative. Rajini’s punching dialogues and the mudhra are going to be the favourite of younger generation for a few months.

In a fight sequence at a volley ball court, Rajini is always on air and earth’s gravitational pull doesn’t seem to have any effect on him. In another fight, Rajini’s shoe hits the villain and returns back to his leg like a boomerang. In another scene, Bharathi Shinde takes Rajini through a hole in a deserted building to Himalayas. Is it some black hole technology that a distance of 3000 kilometres from chennai to himalayas is covered in minutes?

Rajini has a flair for comedy and the comedy scenes with Goundamani are really rib-tickling ones. There's a huge star cast like Nambiar, Sujatha, Delhi Ganesh, Sangavi, Deepa venkat, the Japanese girl, Karunas, Amrish Puri and all are thoroughly wasted. Aashish vidyarthi is one of the villains who overdoes his job and his over action is irritating and sometimes very comical. Chotta K. Naidu’s cinematography is appealing to eyes, especially the “Baba kitchu kitchu” song shot at Switzerland.

Of all the songs, choreography by Ragavendra Lawrence is marvellous in “Maya Maya” song where Rajini has performed well different from his usual style.

Other than the rap song “B to the A to the B to the A, that’s what they say” played whenever Rajini gets into a fight which electrifies the theatres, Rehman has done nothing impressive.

The story is too fictious and autobiographical. The screenplay begins well and flows well till the first part. But once the mythological formula enters, it takes a diversion. Apart from usual Rajini’s formula here they have mixed spirituality with action, love and politics which is a bit difficult for an average fan to understand. May be Rajini at this age is so drawn towards spirituality and is so matured to understand the essence of life. But not all are. In this 21 century, mantras, Saint living for 2000 years, etc. are difficult to digest.

Will Rajini’s charm and charisma still work wonders at the Box office?

Known is a drop: Unknown is an ocean.
