Wondering whether Vijay has turned so religious that he acted
in "Bhagavathi" and now in "Geethai". Some
hindu organisation has filed a case saying that the movie's
title hurt their religious sentiments. The producer is now helpless
as lot of publicity was made and even the cassettes are out
now. The film was initially slated for Tamil new year release
but now postponed for another month.
Yuvan Shankar Raja is fast becoming one of the successful
music directors. The number of films churned out in his music
and his composing music for Ajith and Vijay's films substantiate
the previous statement. "Geethai" is his first
project with Vijay. The director, lyricists and the music
director have come out with the songs keeping Vijay's image
in mind.
"Naan
oadum" by Mano and Tippu should be an introductory
song for Vijay and penned by Vaalee. Vaalee after writing
such motivating songs with messages and advices for M.G.R. and
later for Rajini now writes for Vijay. After a long time, Mano
has sung in Yuvan's music and he has done a good job with vocal
support from Tippu. This fast paced song is a pretty good start
for the album.
"Mercury poove" by Nidheesh Gopalan, Bonnie Chakraborthy
and Bhavatharini is the unmistakable Yuvan Shankar's style
song. The song is not in usual one pallavi and two charanam
style. It begins with a melodious humming by Bhava and suddenly
gains speed and with nerve racking "mercury poove"
line, it is sure to hit the charts. This is the pick of the
album. The male singer sounds a bit feminine and could have
avoided that. Karthik or Srinivas would have been best choice. The
lyrics are by Pa. Vijay and his songs nowadays are so
monotonous like "the sun being cool"etc.
"Vasiyakaari" by Devan and Chitra Sivaraman
is an excellent dance number set in folk style with Yugabharathi's
lyrics . It features again in B side with Hariharan's
voice. The song begins with weird noise (music ???!!!) which
will make the listener wonder whether something is wrong with
his music system. But the song is so catchy and gets in to us
immediately.
"Manase" by Tippu, Bonnie Chakraborthy and Swarnalatha
is based on traditional Bengali Fakiri tune and the credits
are promptly given on the cassette cover itself. Being an already
hit traditional tune, Yuvan has nothing much to do in this song.
Swarnalatha sounds squeaky at places and as usual Tippu has
elevated the spirit of the song by his plastic voice. Pa.Vijay
has given some meaningful lyrics for this song.
"Annamalai
thambi" has lyrics by Vijai Sagar
and beautifully sung by Tippu and Devan. The situation
is that Vijay in dual role dance for this song, one singing
in praise of Western music in western style and another in Ghana
style. Devan has sung in western and Tippu in Ghana style. Though
not upto Deva's calibre in composing a ghana, Yuvan has tried
and given his best. Actually the ghana part is more enjoyable
than the western style. With modern percussions and local tape
music competing, the jugalbandhi is enjoyable and it is sure
to attract vijay's fans.
Overall
"Geethai" is a decent, pucca commercial album catering
the tastes of Vijay's fans. Though Vijay has sung in Yuvan's
music for the film "Velai" for Vignesh, wondering
why he's not lent his voice for his own film. It's a good effort
by Yuvan though his recent projects "Winner" and "Kaadhal
Kondaen" were much better and innovative.
