After a
series of flops, Kamal decided to do a film under his Rajkamal
films banner. The pooja of "Sandiyar" took
place with great pomp and show at Madurai and then came the
trouble. Due to a lot of pressure from community politics, now
he has rechristened the film as ' Virumaandi'. This is
Kamal's third directorial venture. Kamal always has a liking
for Raja's music and nearly 80 films of Kamal have music by
him. After "Hey Ram", Kamal has teamed up with
Ilaiyaraja again. Too much of expectations Kamal creates for
his films usually spoil the show as they did for "Aalavandhaan".
Here too, Kamal went on giving out his praises for music and
shot up the music fan's expectations. And Jeez, Raja has
churned out some rustic tunes with his signature all over and
thereby meeting the high expectations.
1.
Onna vida - Kamal
and Shreya Goshal
The song
begins with the doppler effect sound of a moving vehicle. A
neat melody set in typical Ilaiyaraja's style with an easy-flowing
tune without musical dominance. The tune is so mesmerizing that it gets
into the listener on first hearing itself. It's an "Out
of the world" melody you can't get nowadays. Kamal
has penned the lyrics and has proved again that he is a multi-facetted
personality. Shreya Goshal has pronounced tamil very well that
too with folkish slang. With soul-stirring sarangi pieces
and interludes, this song is the pick of the album.
2. Annalakshmi
- Kamal & chorus
The whole pallavi
is sung by chorus and then comes the foot tapping charanam rendered
by Kamal. It's disappointing as the song has only one charanam.
Ilaiyaraja has written this song and he's given commendable
lyrics. The lines have some cryptic meanings which shows the
versatility of Raja. The tune is catchy and Kamal's high
pitched rendereing lifts the song. "Sandiyare Sandiyare"
by Shreya Goshal is a solo song set in this same tune .
3. Nethiyila
Pottu- Chorus
This bit song
is with fast paced,
toe-tapping folk rhythm. Only after listening to
the lyrics we come to know the situation. This is sung during
the funeral of a very old lady where the young village boys
dance while they take the dead body to
grave yard.
4. Maharaasi
- Theni Kunjaramma
This bit song
is the black mark for this beautiful album. Credit goes
to Theni Kunjaramma's awful voice that goes off the scale and
irritates the listener.
5. Karumaathoor
Kaatukulle- Thiruvudaiyaa, karunaanidhi, Periyakaruppa thevar,
Mary, Sugumar
Villu paatu style
song that narrates the lifehistory of "Virumaandi".
Only after some 3 hearings, the folk setting gets into the listener.
This is a 100% situational song which should be seen along
with visuals.
6. Andha
Kaandaamani- Kamal, Ilaiyaraja, Tippu, Karthik, Surendar
A complete variety
song from Raja set in his own innovative style. Look who have
lent their supporting voices, Karthik and Tippu who are ruling
the TFM nowadays with their solo hits. The song threatens with
amazing beats and orchestrations. Ilaiyaraja has sung this
song in a different voice that will suit for a village Priest
and that could have been avoided as the voice is the only sour
point of this song. "Karpa graham vittu"
by the same set of singers is another song set in the same
tune.
7. Maada
vilakke- Kamal
A melodious
pathos song and Kamal has tried to imitate Raja at places.
This song resembles some of Raja's old songs. Wondering whether
our cine-goers have enough patience to sit during such songs
nowadays. It's now in the hands of director Kamal for picturisation
that should glue the viewer to the seats.
8.
Kombula poova- Kamal & Chorus
Ilaiyaraja has
given "Naiyaandi" style of music and lyrics
for this teasing song.
It suits the situation
where the hero teases the heroine who has lost the bet
in jallikattu. It has beautiful folk style orchestration and
catchy tune. Premiere of this song was played during the
cassette release function and the song was picturised very well
it seems.
Overall it's an out'n out tamil folk based album with an outstanding classic
melody number. Ilaiyaraja has done many experiments in this
album. Kamal has sung 6 songs and it sounds monotonous. S.P.B's
voice suits kamal like glove and it's too bad that Raja is not
using him in his films nowadays. Vaali, Kamal's favourite lyricist
is also missing in this album.
This album is a variety treat to music lovers and its impact can be felt
much more along with visuals as most of the songs are situational
ones.
