UN Approval Mandatory for US Attack on Iraq

In the modern day global politics, wars may be unavoidable given the type of gorilla war the terrorist groups and terrorism-sponsoring countries unleash on civilized nations. At the same time, it is important that we preserve the sanctity of United Nations. If a country accumulates biological and nuclear arms which are unlike the traditional warfares are quite dangerous to humankind, it is necessary to bring in discipline in the form of CTBT, Nuclear Disarmament Treaty, and other such regulations. However, they must not be unilateral and must follow uniform standards for all nations including United States. If a country violates such norms, there is no other go except the war to make them fall in line. One must not misinterpret the support to war which is spelt out here keeping in mind the larger interest of mankind. But the key question with regard to US itching for a war against Iraq is why does US refuse to see reason with the decision of United Nations. The UN Inspection Committee did not find anything majorly disturbing and it has time and again passed resolutions not to resort to war. If more time needs to be given to Iraq or persuade UN to convince Iraq on the dangerous consequences of proliferating perilous warfares, UN and Iraq must be given the required time. It is prejudicial if US wants to attack Iraq pending a final word from UN.

US has even threatened Russia of bitter consequences if it vetoes the resolution to support war in the security council. Already Turkey has passed a resolution in its Parliament not to allow US to use its bases to conduct war against Iraq. Our Prime Minister has cautioned US about the bad precedence that it would be setting if it assaults Iraq without UN support. It would bring down the image and importance of United Nations. UK has shifted from its earlier stance and started supporting US attempts to wage a war against Iraq even without UN approval. Blair would find it difficult to convince his own party colleagues and nation about his change in stance.

All over the world the mood is against the decision of Bush. In spite of all these hue and cry, if Bush goes ahead with his conviction he should share the reasons for his conviction with UN. Otherwise the future generations would hold him as a criminal and he is deserved to be tried in International Criminal Court. It is high time that Bush realizes the importance of taking along the world countries with him instead of acting like a big brother.
