Love - the essence of Christianity
- Stella Jebemani

The key commandments in the Bible comes from Jesus and it goes like this :

Matthew: 22
36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
37 Jesus replied: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

A small meditation on the above verses might help the mankind solve the crisis, which the world is facing today. How much do we love our own self? We really can't say. Because it is not measurable. Are we concerned for our neighbours by any chance? If we are, then there will be peace all over the world. If we really have love for our neighbours why is the commotion in the present world.

How many of us have the feeling that we are superior to the others and there is no one to beat us? Pride and ambition is changing the minds of man into a more mechanical being than a practical one. Empathy and sympathy have got no meaning in the life of human beings in this mechanical world. As a result, the world has become a dangerous place to live in and man is moving from place to place in search of peace and love. There is no security or guarantee for safety. What can be the reason behind this? No man believes others or has love and honour for others. The Bible says

Romans: 12
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

We are asked to honour every other fellow being and show brotherly love. Moving away from our duties or visiting places can bring only temporary happiness or peace. How can it be retained through out our life? The answer is Love. Love alone can bring happiness and joy. Love alone multiplies when shared. The Bible verses about Love go like this

I Corinthians: 13
2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Does showing hatred or being ignorant bring about any good solution? It will only result in bitterness, vengeance and frustration in life. This then continues from one generation to the next. Without Love man is nothing. As humanbeings, we are asked to live in harmony, love others and maintain peace in this beautiful world created by God. This is the duty given to us by God. Let us not forget to do it. May God give us the strength to live in harmony and love every other being like our own self to make this world a beautiful place to live in.
