Future of Astrology?
- Vignesh Ram

The Sun, the moon and the stars, though thousands of miles or rather light years far away from earth, have their influence over the climatic conditions of the earth, tides of the sea etc. But do they have any influence over the life of human beings on earth? Yes, says the field of Astrology and its believers. People believe that each and every aspect of one’s life is pre-programmed by a Super power and his destiny decides the happenings of his life. But still they cannot rest leaving the life in the hands of fate. Human beings are the most curious creatures on the earth who are so interested to know their future.. There are umpteen number of ways man has discovered to predict the future like by Sun signs, moon signs, tarrot, Palmistry, graphology, numerology etc.

But if we give them some rationale thinking, we can sense a lot of flaws in the theory of Astrology. The whole population of human beings on earth can be classified into 12 groups based on their zodiac signs. According to the astrologers, people falling into a particular zodiac sign will have similar characteristics and the happenings in their life will resemble. During some natural calamities like floods or earthquake, thousands of people lose their life. They will all be an assortment of all zodiac signs. How come they all face the same ill fate.

The basic idea behind the predictions of an astrologer is giving out some generalised statements which will suit for everyone who reads it, irrespective of his zodiac sign. You can always come across predictions like “a short journey is on the cards"," you can expect a letter from a foreign country”, “you will meet a dear friend of yours"," Look after your health and financial condition”. As one can see, these are all every day happenings common to all. Who doesn’t get an email from a foreign country nowadays? Everyone will meet a friend daily and everyone should be aware of his health. Some astrologers cross their limits in warning the readers not to travel or not to invest on a particular day, which may lead to various consequences for which the readers usual regret later. Astrologers who claim themselves to be the most accurate forecasters of the future have failed pathetically to predict the results of elections or Worldcup Cricket.

A long term study was conducted in London, from 1958 closely observing the lives of 2000 children who fall into ‘Pisces’ zodiac sign, to study whether their time of birth has any influence over their health and being born at the same time, do they have anything in common? and studying various parameters such as the individuals’ arts, mathematical ability, social mingling, administrative power, tolerance etc. The results of this forty years follow up study conducted by Dr.Ivan Kelly from Canada and Dr. Jeffrey Dean from Australia, were published in the ‘Journal of consciousness’, which clearly states no single person born on the same time had any identical features of any kind. Then when some of the study populations’ characteristic features and star statuses were given to famous astrologers to identify the persons from those details, no body could identify successfully. This scientific evidence clearly unveils that astrology is just a wild guess by talented astrologers. Though this study was criticised by many people saying that it suggests the failure of sun sign based astrology followed by the western people and what we follow in India is based on moonsigns , which is authentic and reliable. Whatever may be the results, still people spend a fortune to know about their future and never miss the horoscope columns in newspapers.
