It is futile to expect happiness and peace from outside. We can find them right inside us.
Through my past experience, I have learnt an important lesson:

Do not expect anything from anyone.
At the same time, Do expect anything from anyone.

Yes, you read it right. Let me explain :

Do not expect anything (thanks/gratitude/help) from anyone (including your near & dear ones).

At the same time, Do expect anything (hurting/back_stabbing/cheating) from anyone (including your near & dear ones).

When you help someone just for the sake of helping, then, you are sure to be happy helping that person. But, if you help someone expecting something in return, then, your happiness is in trouble. The higher your expectation, the greater will be your disappointment. If you do not expect anything in return, and if you do not get anything in return, you will not be affected/disappointed. But, if you do get something in return, well, then you will be pleasantly surprised & happy.
Here, I would like to quote from the teachings of Shree Sathya Sai Baba: In the sentence "I Want Peace", if we remove 'I' which is EGO and if we remove 'Want' which is DESIRE, 'Peace' is all ours !
If we analyze, we will find out that the root cause of all our sufferings stems from EGO& DESIRE. If only we could curb our EGO & DESIRE, this world would be a much happier place.
Some other points to be happy are...
• Live in present (don't cry over the past & don't worry too much about the future).
• Lead a simple life. More the luggages, Less the comfort.
• Always be happy/cheerful. It helps you in many ways.
• Just do your duty. Do your level best, but, don't get affected (too much excited/dejected) by the results.
• As far as possible, help/serve others. But, don't expect anything in return. Not even "THANKS".
