'Thirukural' Rangarajan - Kural Changed his life
- C Manivannan

Thirukural - a couplet contains every thing the society desperately needs and because of this unique greatness, it has been translated to many world languages.

Our Government also, on their part, included Thirukural in the school curriculum. Children who are taught kural gets largely benefited when they grow up in their lives. Of course! One should follow it to reap the benefits. We have a living example for this kind and that makes him very speacial

Rangarajan,43 - a poor textile unit labour in Tiruppur, shot into fame by mastering the art of memorizing all the 1330 kurals and that rightly fetched him a prefix Thirukural to his name. Rangarajan lives in Ammapalayam, Tiruppur with wife and two children. Despite all the odds, he has some how managed his schooling. After some years of wandering he finally settled at Tiruppur with a temporary job as an ordinary labour in a banian factory.

Well, you will get goose bumps if you hear the origin of his achievements.

It all started some two years back. One of his sons had a kural recitation competition in his school. So, he bought a new kural book. After reading out a few chapters to his son, he casually flicked through the pages and suddenly he developed a liking for the kural. He was so fascinated by the POWER of kural. You know, it was a tale of love at first sight (hey folks, not with dames but kurals). He started memorizing 10 kurals a day. To his own surprise, within 6 months he was thorough with all the 1330 kurals.

We are living in an era, where the most important family values and sentiments are getting shattered to the extent that we are not even bothered to heed to the elders' advises. But, here Thirukural has played an imperative part in changing the face of Rangarajan's from rustic to cultured. Now, one can definitely not deny that Thirukural holds sway.

And that's the real command & authority of kural over its followers.

Yes! Rangarajan shed all the bad habits after his acquaintance with kurals. He is totally a reformed man now. He turns veggie. He even becomes a non smoker and teetotaler. Some of the important things in his achievements:

  • He was well over 40 [normally an age with one's mind becomes dud for learning new things] when he started mugging up kurals [ we can now say, Aindhil valayavittalum Imbathil valayum]
  • Ability to recall the kural by its serial numbers, starting or end words and chapters as well.
  • He also knows Abirami Andathi, Siva Puranam, Kanda Guru Kavasam, Shanmuga Kavasam & Kandar Sasti Kavasam.

He dearly likes to spread the message of kural to all the villages projecting him self as an example. But his living in penury state simply prevents him from undertaking such noble things.

He has been honoured by DYFI - Tiruppur unit, Valarum Ezhuthlar Mandram, Vanpugazhl Valluvan Arakattalai and Arivu Thirukoil.

His immediate task is settling in a good job for the survival and then only he can carry out his dreams to the reality.

Nilacharal heartily wishes him Good Luck in all his ventures!
