A trip to New York...(1)

Trip to New York followed our visit to Niagara Falls.  We drove from Niagara Falls to New Jersey and stayed at one of our friends’ place.  He greeted us with delicious homemade Chicken Biriyani.  We had a great dinner and a very good night’s rest.  The next day we were fresh and full of energy for our visit to New York.  My husband, his friend and myself started for our New York visit on 26th May 2002 from New Jersey.  Jamil, a friend working in New York guided us through out the trip.  So it wasn’t difficult for us to locate and visit the historical places in the city.  We reached New York by Electric train.  As soon as we entered New York, I felt like being in some metropolitan city in India.  The city is fully packed with skyscrapers and narrow streets.  Every building competes with each other in its height soaring up to the sky.  We decided to visit Statue of Liberty Monument first and started walking through the world famous Wall street, one of the most important financial places in the world.  On our way we reached the Conde Nast Building that houses NASDAQ.  We took few pictures there and headed towards Battery Park to fetch the ferry to Statue of liberty Monument

Located at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, The Battery is one of New York City's oldest public open spaces. It is where Dutch settlers landed in 1623, and where the first "battery" of cannons was erected to defend New Amsterdam. The Battery is now a cradle of New York history, the front lawn of the Downtown district, and a hub of harbor access and cultural tourism. Four million people, including local residents and office workers, school groups, daycare and camp groups, senior citizens, and national and international tourists, annually visit the park and its major landmark, Castle Clinton National Monument.  Castle Clinton presently serves as a busy ticketing center for three million passengers who annually board ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

A Sphere, salvaged from World Trade Center Disaster Site was placed in Battery Park.  It was in a distorted shape and lots people were taking pictures of it.  The 25' high sphere stood in the WTC Plaza as a monument to world peace from 1971 to September 11, 2001 and was distorted by the September 11th attack.  We also took few pictures near the Sphere.  Few other statues were erected in the park and the one I liked the most was that of a Universal Soldier with flags of all the countries in the world carved at the bottom of the sculpture.  I felt very much delighted to see Indian flag among the other countries’ flag.  This is a New York Korean War Veterans Memorial dedicated on June 25, 1991 made of Obelisk with cutout in shape of soldier on base with mosaic, two plaques on two markers in circular plaza.  We also took pictures near American Merchant Mariners' Memorial, dedicated on October 8, 1991, which depicts merchant mariners in a sinking lifeboat; dedicated to merchant mariners lost at sea.

Let's Visit the Statue of Liberty Next week........
