1. Which font should I use while contributing my articles to Nilacharal?

We are using TheneeUni Unicode font. It is preferable, if you could send your articles in any of the Unicode fonts.

‘Latha’ and ‘Arial Unicode MS’ are the two Unicode fonts already installed in your system if you are using Windows 2000/2003/XP.

2. How can I type Tamil in Unicode format?

  • Notepad, WordPad, MS Office XP and its later versions support Unicode Tamil typing.

  • To type in tamil in these applications, you need to install a tamil typewriting interface utility. E-kalappai is such a utility and it can be downloaded for free from here.
    http://www.thamizha.com/system/files/ekalappai20b_anjal_0.exe

  • After installing e-kalappai, an icon will be placed on the task bar.

  • Click on the icon and select UNICODE TAMIL

  • Then start typing in tamil in any of the applications mentioned above.

3. I am unable to read Tamil Unicode characters properly. They appear as squares in MS Word.

To overcome this problem, the following steps have to be performed in your operating system (applies only to Windows XP / 2000) :

  • Click on "Start ->Control Panel->Date, Time, Language and Regional Options->Regional and Language Options"

  • Click on 'Languages' tab at the top

  • In 'Supplemental language support', click the checkbox "Install files for Complex Script and right to left languages (including Thai)" and then click OK

  • Now, it will start installing some required files and Windows XP CD will be required to complete the process.

  • You might have to restart the machine for the new setting to take effect.

4. I have the content typed in TSC / TAB / TAM / Bamini font. How do I convert it into Unicode?

You can download NHM Converter from the following link and install in your system. This tool is very simple to use and works fast even for large volume of text.

http://software.nhm.in/Products/NHMConverter/tabid/60/Default.aspx

It requires to download and install atleast .NET Framework 1.1 or greater. It is available in the following link.
