Q:

This human mind thinks unwanted thoughts, has unwanted dreams. How do we gain control over this?

The suppressed anxieties and fears you have express themselves in the form of thoughts or dreams. Never take them seriously; they are mere subconscious projections of your fears. You do not have direct control over them. If you want to grow beyond thoughts, you must cultivate detachment towards the world. Train your subconscious mind when your mind is agile and it will gradually conquer all fears and concerns.

A man dreamt that all of his nine children had passed away and he sat crying through the event. He woke up to realize it was a nightmare and smiled. Just then his wife came in saying that his last son had passed away. Noting no reaction in her husband, she questioned him, to which he replied, ‘I had a nightmare that all our children had passed away and I have wept enough for them. I have no tears left in me for one child.’ Some dreams may prepare you for the future. And again, these stem from attachments to worldly relations and possessions.

A merchant received news that his ship had sunk. Depressed, he broke down weeping. Just then his manager came to him with the news that they could recover the losses through insurance claims. The merchant’s sorrow gave way to joy. Just as he sat up smiling, his manager came in again with the news that they had forgotten to renew the insurance. And the merchant went back to regretting over his losses.

This is an instance to show how the human mind oscillates between joy and sorrow, because of its attachment. When its expectations are fulfilled, the mind experiences joy. When its expectations are not met, the mind experiences sorrow.

Siva Shankar Baba is ready to embrace death with open arms; I am not distressed; I am contented. I consider it a wasteful exercise repeatedly undergoing life’s experiences, when I have grown beyond life. Once you have done with your excursion to a tourist place, what is left but to pack off for home? I was on an excursion to Earth, I have had my fill of life’s experiences and now I am all set to pack off for my Eternal Home. All of us are celestials and we are touring this world. Once our ‘outing’ is over, we need to return to our Home.

When you understand this, you will gradually experience detachment and progress towards contentment. And then, just as I do, you will be in meditation internally, even though you carry on with your responsibilities externally. Nothing will affect you. At that stage, there is no place for worldly thoughts. But remember  - you cannot leave the world in a state of distress. You can bid farewell to it, only when you achieve contentment, when you grow beyond thoughts.
